A tooth has been avulsed. What is the BEST treatment?

  1. Flexible splint for 14–21 days
  2. Rigid splint for 8 weeks
  3. Semi-rigid splint for 4 weeks
  4. Extract and place immediate implant
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Flexible splint for 14–21 days

Per IADT guidelines, avulsed permanent teeth should be re-implanted and stabilized with a FLEXIBLE (physiologic) splint for 1–2 weeks (up to 4 weeks if bone fracture). Flexible splints allow slight movement which promotes PDL healing. Rigid splinting promotes ankylosis. 8-week rigid splinting is outdated and harmful.
