Endodontics · single question

What is the PRIMARY mechanism by which sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is used in endodontics?

  1. Mechanically removes debris (chelation)
  2. Bactericidal action through tissue dissolution and antimicrobial activity
  3. Provides lubrication for instruments
  4. Stimulates periapical healing
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Bactericidal action through tissue dissolution and antimicrobial activity

Sodium hypochlorite is the most widely used endodontic irrigant because of its bactericidal properties and tissue-dissolving ability. Mechanism: NaOCl dissolves organic tissue (necrotic pulp, bacteria, biofilm) through saponification and chlorination of proteins. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It cannot replace mechanical instrumentation but kills organisms in the organic substrate. EDTA (chelation) is used for smear layer removal — that is NOT NaOCl's primary role.
