The 'Swiss cheese' (cribriform) histologic pattern is characteristically seen in which salivary gland tumor?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Adenoid cystic carcinoma
Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is classically associated with the cribriform ('Swiss cheese') pattern, in which tumor cells form cylindrical nests with round 'holes' (pseudocysts filled with hyaline material). ACC is the most common malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands, has a propensity for perineural invasion, and tends to recur. The cribriform pattern is pathognomonic. It can also show tubular and solid patterns, with the solid pattern carrying the worst prognosis.
