Which was the FIRST opportunistic infection associated with HIV/AIDS?

  1. Kaposi's sarcoma
  2. Oral hairy leukoplakia
  3. Pneumocystis pneumonia
  4. Candidiasis
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Kaposi's sarcoma

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in young homosexual men was the hallmark of the original AIDS case reports in 1981 (Gottlieb et al., MMWR). KS was so unusual in young immunocompetent individuals that it signaled the new immune deficiency syndrome. Pneumocystis pneumonia was also present, but KS was most notable. Oral hairy leukoplakia is EBV-associated and highly specific for HIV.
