What is the route of transmission for Impetigo infection?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Direct contact
Direct contact (A) is the primary route of transmission for Impetigo. Impetigo is a highly contagious superficial bacterial skin infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus (most common) and/or Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Strep). It spreads through:
• Direct skin-to-skin contact with infected lesions
• Contact with contaminated objects/surfaces (fomites)
• Autoinoculation (touching own lesions then other areas)
• Clinical relevance in dentistry: Impetigo lesions around the mouth must be recognized — dental treatment should be deferred until resolved to prevent cross-contamination. The honey-colored crusted lesions around the lips/perioral area are classic.
• NOT transmitted by airborne droplets or fecal-oral route.
