DAY 2 — CASE 15: What is buspirone used for?

  1. Generalized anxiety disorder
  2. Bipolar depression
  3. Opioid withdrawal
  4. Acute panic attacks
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Generalized anxiety disorder

  • A. BUSPIRONE (BuSpar) is a non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic specifically approved for GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER (GAD). It is a partial agonist at serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and a weak D2 dopamine receptor agonist. Unlike benzodiazepines, it has no abuse potential, no sedation, and requires 2–4 weeks to reach full effect. It is NOT effective for acute anxiety or panic attacks.
  • B. Bipolar depression is treated with mood stabilizers (lithium, valproate) or atypical antipsychotics — not buspirone.
  • C. Opioid withdrawal is managed with methadone, buprenorphine, or clonidine — not buspirone.
  • D. Acute panic attacks are treated with benzodiazepines (fast onset) — buspirone is too slow for acute use.
