The CDC and ADA recommend that dental offices perform biological indicator (spore) testing at least weekly — not necessarily every day the sterilizer is used. A positive spore test after a sterilization cycle indicates a malfunction; the sterilizer should be taken out of service, the cause identified and corrected, and the test repeated before returning to clinical use.
