Von Willebrand Disease — which is the most common type?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Type 1
Type 1 (A) is the most common form of Von Willebrand Disease (VWD), accounting for approximately 70-80% of cases. Type 1 is a partial quantitative deficiency of Von Willebrand Factor (vWF) — the protein is present but in reduced amounts. It is autosomal dominant with variable penetrance.
• Type 2: Qualitative defect — vWF is present but dysfunctional. Multiple subtypes (2A, 2B, 2M, 2N).
• Type 3: Most SEVERE form — near-complete absence of vWF, resembles hemophilia A clinically. Rare.
• Type 4: Does not exist as a standard VWD classification.
• VWD is the MOST COMMON inherited bleeding disorder overall.
• Dental management: DDAVP (desmopressin) stimulates release of stored vWF for Type 1 before procedures.
