The Munsell Color System includes all of the following EXCEPT:
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Translucency
Translucency (D) is NOT part of the Munsell Color System. The Munsell system has THREE dimensions of color:
• Hue: the name/family of color (red, yellow, blue-green, etc.) — in dentistry: yellowish (most common)
• Value: lightness or darkness of the color (1=black to 10=white). Most important dimension for tooth shade selection.
• Chroma: saturation or intensity of the hue — how vivid or grey/muted the color is
• Translucency: how much light passes through an object. Relevant in dental aesthetics (incisal edge translucency) but NOT one of the three Munsell dimensions.
• Vita Classical shade guide uses these Munsell principles. Value should be assessed first (squint your eyes), then hue, then chroma.

- A. Value IS part of the Munsell system — it describes lightness or darkness (most important dimension in dental shade matching).
- B. Hue IS part of the Munsell system — it describes the basic color family (red, blue, yellow, etc.).
- C. TRANSLUCENCY is NOT part of the Munsell color system. The three Munsell dimensions are: Hue, Value, and Chroma. Translucency is important in dental shade selection but is NOT one of Munsell's dimensions.
- D. Chroma IS part of the Munsell system — it describes saturation/intensity of the color.
