On a panoramic radiograph, the right ramus appears WIDER than the left. What patient positioning error caused this?

  1. The patient turned their head to the LEFT (chin rotated left)
  2. The patient turned their head to the RIGHT
  3. The patient's neck was hyperextended
  4. The cassette was reversed
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. The patient turned their head to the LEFT (chin rotated left)

When a patient rotates their head to the LEFT, the right side moves CLOSER to the film/sensor and the left side moves FARTHER away. In panoramic imaging, the side closer to the image receptor appears larger/wider, and the side farther away appears narrower/blurred. So right ramus wider = patient's head rotated LEFT. This is a fundamental panoramic positioning error question on the INBDE.
