Prosthodontics & Occlusion · single question
In which jaw relationship are complete dentures (upper and lower) constructed/rehabilitated?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Centric Relation
Centric Relation (A). Complete dentures are constructed in centric relation (CR) because:
• Edentulous patients have NO natural teeth to guide the mandible to maximum intercuspation (MI).
• CR is a reproducible, ligamentous position of the condyles (most anterosuperior position in the fossa) that can be reliably recorded.
• CR allows the dentist to establish a stable, repeatable occlusion for the denture.
• Centric Occlusion / MI (B): The tooth-guided position of maximum interdigitation — only applicable in dentate patients.
• In ideal complete denture occlusion: CR and CO should coincide (or CO is 1-2mm anterior to CR with a 'long centric').
• Clinical significance: Errors in CR registration lead to poorly-fitting, uncomfortable dentures with compromised chewing efficiency.
