Prosthodontics & Occlusion · single question
At the first follow-up appointment after delivery of complete dentures, what should be checked FIRST?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Pressure (sore) spots in the denture-bearing mucosa
- A. The vertical dimension was established and verified at the wax try-in. It is reassessed only if a specific problem such as clicking teeth or cheek biting points to it.
- B. Speech normally settles within one to two weeks as the tongue adapts. Persistent difficulty after that period is investigated, but it is not the first-visit priority.
- C. CORRECT. The 24-to-48-hour review exists to find and relieve areas of mucosal trauma before they ulcerate. Examine the tissues first, identify the sore spots, mark them with pressure-indicating paste or disclosing wax, transfer the marks to the denture and relieve them. Comfort precedes refinement.
- D. Aesthetics were approved by the patient at try-in. Changing them now means remaking the prosthesis.
Note: Distinguish generalised soreness from focal soreness. A discrete ulcer at a defined point means an overextended border or a pressure area — relieve it. Generalised soreness across the whole bearing area usually means an occlusal discrepancy loading the base unevenly, and adjusting the denture base will not fix it.
