A lesion between the SOFT and HARD palate is found. All of the following are in the differential diagnosis EXCEPT:
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Nasopalatine cyst (located anteriorly at the incisive foramen — NOT between soft/hard palate)
- A. Pleomorphic adenoma CAN occur in minor salivary glands at the soft-hard palate junction — it IS in the DDx.
- B. Mucocele from minor salivary glands can occur at the palate junction — it IS in the DDx.
- C. Granular cell tumor occurs on the tongue/dorsum but can occur at the palate — it CAN be in the DDx.
- D. Correct. The NASOPALATINE CYST (incisive canal cyst) arises from remnants of the nasopalatine ducts in the INCISIVE FORAMEN — located ANTERIORLY in the midline of the HARD palate behind the central incisors. It is NOT located at the soft/hard palate junction. Therefore it is the EXCEPTION in the DDx for a lesion at the junction of soft and hard palate.
