A biopsy reveals Civatte bodies (colloid/hyaline bodies) in the superficial dermis/submucosa. What is the MOST appropriate treatment?

  1. Clobetasol propionate (topical corticosteroid)
  2. Acyclovir (antiviral)
  3. Amoxicillin (antibiotic)
  4. Clotrimazole (antifungal)
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Clobetasol propionate (topical corticosteroid)

Civatte bodies (eosinophilic, colloid bodies) are apoptotic keratinocytes found in the basal layer and are pathognomonic of Lichen Planus (LP). LP is treated with high-potency topical corticosteroids such as clobetasol propionate gel or cream. Clobetasol is a Class I (superpotent) corticosteroid used for erosive and painful LP. For refractory LP, systemic corticosteroids or tacrolimus may be used.
