Infection Control · single question

A biohazard label is required on all of the following EXCEPT:

  1. Containers used to transport contaminated sharps
  2. A refrigerator used to store dental materials
  3. A refrigerator used to store blood or other potentially infectious material
  4. Bags or containers holding regulated medical waste
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. A refrigerator used to store dental materials

  • A. Containers used to store, transport or ship contaminated sharps must be labelled — and must also be closable, puncture-resistant, leak-proof, and colour-coded red or biohazard-labelled.
  • B. CORRECT as the EXCEPTION. A refrigerator holding only dental materials — impression material, composite, anaesthetic cartridges — contains no potentially infectious material and therefore requires no biohazard label. Applying labels where they are not needed is not harmless: it dilutes their meaning, and staff who see the symbol everywhere stop reacting to it where it matters.
  • C. A refrigerator or freezer storing blood or other potentially infectious material MUST carry the biohazard label under the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.
  • D. Regulated waste containers and bags must be labelled with the biohazard symbol or be red in colour.

Note: The OSHA labelling rule under 29 CFR 1910.1030: labels are fluorescent orange or orange-red with the biohazard symbol and the word BIOHAZARD, and they are required on containers of regulated waste, refrigerators and freezers holding blood or OPIM, and containers used to store, transport or ship such material. Red bags or red containers may substitute for labels.
