INBDE content outline: clinical areas and foundation knowledge
Every INBDE item is built from a clinical content area and a foundation knowledge area. The official blueprint shows how many items go to each.
Three clinical content areas
| Clinical content area | Share of items | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Oral Health Management | 42% | Delivering care: pain and anxiety control, medications and complications, endodontics, restorative and prosthetic care, implants, oral surgery, occlusion, temporomandibular disorders, outcomes and esthetics. |
| Diagnosis and Treatment Planning | 36% | Assessing the patient: history and medical data, examination, diagnostic tests and interpretation, systemic disease, prognosis, and building and explaining a treatment plan. |
| Practice and Profession | 22% | Ethics and jurisprudence, records, risk management, infection control, practice management, evidence-based dentistry, prevention and community oral health, working with the dental team. |
Ten foundation knowledge areas
| # | Foundation knowledge area | Share of items |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Molecular, biochemical, cellular, and systems-level development, structure, and function | 12% |
| 2 | Physics and chemistry to explain normal biology and pathobiology | 7% |
| 3 | Physics and chemistry to explain the characteristics and use of technologies and materials | 8% |
| 4 | Principles of genetic, congenital and developmental diseases and conditions | 11% |
| 5 | Cellular and molecular bases of immune and non-immune host defense | 9% |
| 6 | General and disease-specific pathology to assess patient risk | 12% |
| 7 | The biology of microorganisms in physiology and pathology | 11% |
| 8 | Pharmacology | 11% |
| 9 | Behavioral sciences, ethics and jurisprudence | 11% |
| 10 | Research methodology and analysis, and informatics tools | 10% |
The full blueprint
Percentages are rounded and each item draws on both a clinical area and a foundation area. The largest single cells are Oral Health Management with FK 1 (7%), then Diagnosis and Treatment Planning with FK 1, FK 4 and FK 6 (5% each) and Practice and Profession with FK 9 (5%).
What this means for your study
- No area is negligible. Even the smallest foundation area (FK 2) accounts for about 7% of items.
- Ethics, research and pharmacology together are roughly a third of the exam, and they are often under-studied.
- Clinical disciplines such as endodontics or periodontics appear inside the Oral Health Management and Diagnosis areas, so practice them as applied cases, not isolated facts.
JCNDE also publishes a document called Foundation Knowledge for the General Dentist on its INBDE preparation page, with detailed topic lists for each area. Read it alongside our topic pages, which show the closest official area for each discipline.
